“As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other;
just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful.” (Colossians 3:12-15 NRSV)
This Scripture text is one that I use often as a touchstone in my life. It reminds me that I am chosen, that I am beloved, and that God embraces me with compassion, kindness, and patience. As I experience this kind of loving relationship with God, I am also called to share it with others.
It is Monday morning and I have to get this article to Shirley so she can send the Messenger out on time. I know, the articles were due last Thursday, but that’s how it is some months!
Even though all kinds of thoughts are swarming around my brain, none of them are finding their way to the computer. Gosh, that is frustrating! So, I go back to my touchstones to bring me comfort and help give me direction.
Today the words that are catching my attention are “and be thankful.” With that in mind, here are the words that are finally emerging . . .
* I am thankful that, even though it is cloudy today, we have had a few days of sunshine that lift my spirits and bring a smile to my face.
* I am thankful for the seven people we welcomed into membership yesterday during
worship. I look forward to being in ministry with them and growing together in faith.
* I am thankful that the sky was clear last night and I saw a sliver of the moon and the brilliant
glow of Venus.
* I am thankful for our confirmation youth and how they feel comfortable enough to tease me and make our time together fun.
* I am thankful to be a part of conversations of care and concern for people we love.
* I am thankful I have a warm, safe, beautiful place to live, and that I have good food to eat that nourishes my body.
* I am thankful for friends that become family.
* I am thankful for the many ways we are in ministry together in our church, our community and our world.
* I am thankful for opportunities and experiences that push me outside of my comfort zone!
* I am thankful that I have three older brothers who are the best brothers any sister could have.
* I am thankful for our church building where we gather to worship, cook, study, learn, sing and play.
* I am thankful that my list could go on and on and on!
“As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved . . . be thankful.” Time to start your list!
Peace & joy, Cindy
