Storytelling — October 2021

October Penny

We all know Jesus was a master storyteller. His parables drew listeners in and then turned common perceptions on their heads with surprise endings. Consider the parable of the dishonest steward who was lifted up as an example of ingenuity in a tough situation (Luke 16) or the Good Samaritan (Luke 10) who had no reason to show compassion but did anyway, or the Prodigal Son (Luke 15) which really should be named the Kind Forgiving Generous Father. Jesus told stories to help his hearers know more about God. He told stories to instruct and bring the community together. Just as Jesus was a storyteller, we too continue to tell stories of God in our midst to instruct and bring the community together. I want to invite you into two such opportunities.

The first is an invitation to participate in the “Connection Project” getting started here at Asbury. At the end of September you should have received a mailing inviting you to help tell the stories of connections with God and with Asbury. You were asked to consider the past few years and to think how these connections can be strengthened going forward. We have all been through difficulties with the pandemic and part of our healing involves sharing our stories with one another.

In the October 2021 newsletter (pages 7-8), you will find both the invitation to join together in groups to share stories as well as the four-question survey which will guide our listening times. Please take time to fill out the survey and come to one of the sharing times (sign-up sheets are on a table in the Narthex). If you can’t make the times listed, but are interested in sharing, let me know and I’ll see if we can gather a different group together. Regardless of if you come to one of the sharing times, I would like to hear from each of you, so please fill out the survey and send it in.

The second opportunity for hearing and sharing stories is during our stewardship time. This year’s theme focuses on how our giving is an opportunity to express our love for God and our neighbor, especially in these uncertain times. As we talk about loving God with our heart, mind, soul, and strength, I invite you to see your giving as a response to the love that God has given you. God created us to live in community, supporting and loving one another, and so our giving is actually an opportunity to enter into that supporting community. I know that especially in uncertain times for me, I make sure to set aside money for the church first, knowing that it builds my relationship, trust and love for God.

During our stewardship Sundays, you will hear stories of how your offerings are building up and this community as one that shares God’s love for all people. I hope you will enjoy the stories, and reflect on your own stories of loving God and loving your neighbors.

These are just two opportunities to hear and tell your stories of love and grace. Know that I am
always interested in hearing from you as well. Feel free to reach out to me by phone 828-263-2035 or email: kcornell@wnccumc.net. Here’s to telling our stories!

Blessings and Peace,

Katherine
